Film School II was a group show at Giant Robot Gallery in Los Angeles in which artists with entertainment design backgrounds each painted film stills from movies of their choice. I approached my selection as a curator. The films look unrelated on paper (Muriel’s Wedding, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sideways, and others) and span horror, comedy, and romance, but I read a common theme in them: the pressure to force yourself into the person you believe you are supposed to be, for better or worse. Together the paintings show how wide a range a single genre can hold, and they ask the viewer to look at their own relationship to genre and narrative with affection.
I avoided the famous set pieces. I chose quiet moments that were never meant to be screen grabs and painted how the scene feels, in appreciation of its mise-en-scène. The focus is kept soft on purpose and the images are abstracted as far as possible, so that what remains is the feeling of the scene.
